Sometimes on a weekend, when Brent and I are watching the millionth episode of Parenthood, (stop your snickering, we do have a social life), I tend to hanker for something delectable. I, for some time, was held hostage by a severe Peppermint Pattie addiction, but clearly, Peppermint Patties, God bless them, do not have the creds to pass as paleo. So, I gave them up. Since the abolishment of Peppermint Patties, I have been searching for a yummy sweet treat to enjoy.
I love crap that is reversible or multifunctional. Two uses for one thing gets me every time! I love it! When I was growing up, my family had this circular, wooden table that was a coffee table, but with the flick of a switch it miraculously transformed into a bar-height, cocktail and card table. I was completely obsessed with the thing. I loved the fact that this one object could be two, or even three different things. It was like we had a reversible table!
Back to the smoothie; when I concocted this recipe – that hits your taste buds like a wallop of velvety, frozen mousse, by the way – I realized that the final version could be as adept at being a smoothie, as it was as a dessert (Sorry Peppermint Pattie). My new Chocolate Mousse Smoothie got my full attention after I realized that it is indeed…wait for it…REVERSIBLE.

The first video I ever made for WELLFITandFED was “The Smoothie Maker” with my good friend Mike. In the video, we make an anti-inflammatory smoothie that is “natural medicine” in a blender. It is loaded with anti-inflammatory foods like fish oil, vitamin D, and a bunch of “superfoods,” so it is a highly absorbable way to get the essential nutrients our bodies need.
When I formulated the recipe for the Reversible Chocolate Mousse Smoothie, I wanted to make sure it was nutritionally dense, as well.
So, let’s take a gander at the ingredients:
- HAZELNUTS: Hazelnuts are high vitamin E and minerals, and rich in foliate and fiber. They also boost your energy level!
- BANANAS: Bananas are rich in potassium and B6. They also contain large amounts of fiber and tryptophan.
- DATES: Dates are rich in fiber, and an excellent source of iron. They also have a healthy dose of vitamin A, potassium, and several minerals.
- AVOCADOS: Avocados are a tremendous source of vitamin A, E, and K along with potassium and magnesium. They are also loaded with omega 3 (healthy fats).
- MAPLE SYRUP: Maple syrup is loaded with calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus sodium, potassium, and zinc and vitamins such as thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, and B6
- COCOA POWDER: Cocoa powder is rich in iron, manganese, magnesium, and zinc. It is also one of the earth’s great “superfoods!”
- PUMPKINS: Pumpkins are rich in dietary fiber, antioxidants, minerals, and vitamins. They are also very low in calories.

Enjoy!
What ways do you switch out less healthy foods for more nutrient dense, body-happy choices? I challenge you this week to look closely at your diet and see if there are areas that you could make a switch. Is there a food that has you hostage? A sure sign it probably needs to go.
If you liked this post you will trip over yourself getting to these!

Yum! I have been seeing so many recipes using dates lately and just haven’t ventured out enough to use them. This looks really tasty though:)
Yum, this sounds delicious! Don’t worry, I didn’t snicker at weekend binge-fests of parenthood…I have been there 🙂
That looks delicious and so many options! It would also be the perfect treat after shedding all those tears watching Parenthood 😉

(Brent must have been sad to get the entire bag of PP that you received last Thursday. :))
This looks delicious! What could I substitute for hazelnuts?
Mikayla | A Seersucker State of Mind.

hmmm this looks delicious and I might be able to get the guys to eat it, if I don’t tell them about the avocado!
Totes, Angela. Tell them it is a Frosty (do they still make that crap? Ha Ha) from Wendy’s. They will never know! (kidding…sort of) 🙂
This seriously looks so amazing!
Thanks, Chelsea. I wanted to make it when I posted it this morning!
This looks delicious! I’ve been looking *everywhere* for hazelnuts in bulk. Actually I probably could have found them at Rainbow when I was there on Sunday – why did I just come to this realization now. I’ll have to go back. Then it’s time for smoothies and homemade nutella without the dairy, processed sugar, and palm oil – yuck!
Good work, Kathryn. Nutella would be good here too!
Yummy! I’m going to try this recipe. You don’t have to feel guilty eating this! Great post. Thank you!
Thanks, Jenn! I love it too and always go back to it. Sign of a good recipe, right?

Me too, Kari! I love sneaking in healthy goodness where I can! 🙂
These sound too good to be true. I get something similar from a local juice bar and it’s so filling I get two meals out of it.
