Looking for an energy shot right into your morning?
I recently travelled to Palm Springs on a writing retreat. (See Blog post Brebattical.) In the mornings, I would spend some time at the gym. After working out, I would purchase a green smoothie from the smoothie bar on the corner. One morning, as I was waiting for my smoothie, I noticed the shop had a selection of offerings on the board called “Booster Shots.” I thought to myself, “Pretty sure I need a booster!” So, I ordered one.
It arrived in a little wee cup with a pleasant sprinkle of red something or other on the top. So, as I waited for my smoothie, I threw my head back and swallowed the contents.
KABAM!! My taste buds were assaulted with a mixture of fire and tartness, both of which were oddly invigorating. I suddenly felt alert. And the sluggishness from my workout? – Gone.
I questioned the girl behind the counter about the contents of the booster shot, and she gave me the rundown:
Fresh pressed apple
Fresh pressed lemon
Cayenne pepper
Ginger
WOWZA!!
I am a smoothie girl. Three to four times a week I whip up some concoction of wholesome goodness to start my day. BUT, now with the choice of a “booster”, I had other options. Perhaps on days I didn’t have time to make a smoothie, I could make a version of the fabulous “Palm Springs booster” to get my butt out the door.
Check out my daily smoothie recipe HERE
I do not have a juicer at home, so I needed to improvise. After a couple of failed attempts, I finally got it! Here is my “homemade booster” that will jumpstart morning energy, increase immunity and decrease inflammation.

MORNING BOOSTER
One ounce of pure organic lemon juice
One Ounce Pure Organic Apple Juice
One dash of cayenne pepper
One press of fresh ginger (use a garlic press or get the pre-packaged, pressed organic ginger in a tube.)
Shake well in a closed container and then pour into a small glass and enjoy!
The “why” behind the ingredients:
LEMON: These tart fruits support healthy digestion. They are also great for skin health, and immunity. Also, lemons can help lower high blood pressure and support weight management. Lemons are an excellent source of vitamin C and in some cases can help resolve kidney stones. Lemons are also alkalizing, which means they help restore optimal PH levels in the body. Finally, lemons help increase peristalsis in the bowel, resulting in improved elimination.
APPLE: The flavonols in apples may help prevent cancer and decrease your risk of diabetes. Apples are a good source of fiber and vitamin C.
CAYENNE: This spicy herb helps break down, and absorb nutrients in food. It is also good for indigestion. Some research studies have also attributed weight loss to high doses of cayenne. This spice also has metabolizing properties that can help you reach and maintain a healthy weight. Cayenne supports healthy blood flow and prevents blood clots. It is also high in vitamin A and C and is an excellent source of minerals like potassium.
GINGER: This powerful spice is superb for inflammation and pain. Ginger is also good for blood circulation and the absorption of nutrients. Ginger also strengthens your immune system and reduces your risk of developing colds and viruses.
Starting your morning with The Booster will provide you with lots of energy, oodles of health benefits and a flavor-packed punch to make sure you are awake and ready for the day.

I could definitely use a boost! I think I’ll give this a try, thanks for the recipe!
It really gets you going!
This looks amazing!! I will definitely need to give this a shot.
Please do!
That sounds amazing! I can totally see how that would wake someone right up and bring their senses to attention. This is something I will need to try very soon. Thanks for sharing!
It really is quite delicious! 🙂
Is it like super hot or just a tinge? (I am not a fan of spicy but this sounds so good!)
You can adjust the cayenne to your liking. My recommendation is to do it without the Cayenne first and see if the ginger is enough of a KAPOW for you. 🙂
Cayenne pepper!! That would be quite a boost!
SO good for circulation and inflammation! 🙂
This sounds amazing! I love starting my day with a “boost” of health! I am going to make this tomorrow. If you ever juice with beets, let me know. I would love to feature your post of my beet website. I love your blog!
Ohhhh….That is very tempting! I love that you are Beet specific. You have a great blog!
Sounds like it would be quite a zing in the mouth with the cayenne and ginger. It does definitely sound healthy.
Party in your mouth, Rebecca. Party in your mouth! 🙂
