Why Your Protein Powder is Garbage

First, why are protein powders no good?

(1:35) Primarily, because there is so much processing involved in making them into a powdered form. Luckily, there are still great options on the market that are well sourced, organically-based, and free and clear of the junk Dr. Denniston mentions further into the episode.

Heat used in the production process denatures protein. (2:43)

Preservatives like soy, xantham gum, soy lecithin and more are added to protein powder. (3:15)

GMO ingredients, do we need to say anything more? (4:27)

Allergens like egg, soy, wheat, dairy, and corn are found in protein powders in a more concentrated form. (5:09)

Teenagers, who are adding protein to their sport/fitness regiment, are likely consuming well above the recommended serving size. (5:53)

Artificial sweeteners used to adjust the flavor are absolutely positively NOT good for you. (7:04)

It’s unregulated by the FDA. (7:52)

Heavy metals have been found in some protein powders. (9:46)

What about whey protein powder?

Whey is the #1 ingredient in most protein powders. However, whey is a dairy product that can affect those with dairy sensitivities or practice a paleo lifestyle. Dairy-free, whey-free protein powders are a better option in those instances. (12:50)

What are Dr. Denniston’s favorite protein powders?

(14:25) Dr. Denniston shares her full list of recommended protein powders. Make sure to watch the video in full to hear about all the benefits of each one.
